Flying Officer Robert Louis Rizon was an American staff pilot at Fingal. On November 29, 1940 he wrote a letter to Captain Ernest Benway and staff at the Clayton Knight Committee office in Hollywood.

"Just a note to let you know how much I am enjoying my stay as an Officer in His Majesty's Air Force, and, to thank you for giving me this opportunity. I have found everything that you told me about the RCAF to be true beyond my greatest expectations. Not only myself, but all the American pilots that I have met so far, feel the same as I. The Canadian peope have given us a very wrm welcome, and have gone out of their way to make our stay a pleasant one.

"I am posted at No. 1 Bombing and Gunnery School, located at Jarvis, Ontario and I am flying Fairey Battles. Our job is to fly the student bombers and gunners over theri respective courses, and I might add that we are putting in 7 to 8 hours a day flying time, which certainly meets with the approval of the American boys."

Course No. 2 Air Observers and Course No. 1 Air Gunners: September 15 - October 28, 1940

Group Captain J.C. Waite, station officer commanding, spoke briefly to the first course to graduate from Jarvis.

"You are now passing a big and important milestone in your Air Force careers. From now on, you are entering a world of grim reality. You are on your own. I am sure each and every one of you will conduct himself in line with the best traditions of the force."

Air Vice-Marshal L.S. Breadner, D.S.C., Chief of the Air Staff, presented wings and addressed the graduates.

"When Churchill stated so abtly that never in the field of human conflict was so much owed to so few, I am sure that in the minds of most of us was the thought of the pilots and gunners and observers and others of the air crews. Your duties are among the most dramatic of all phases of the Air Force.

'But, don't forget, that behind your important work must stand the thousands of airmen forming ground crews and the schools like this one, all of which are required to make the Air Force effective. I should say 'thank you' for so beautifully completing these young men's training."

Dennis Salmon was born in Plymouth, England and came to the U.S. when he was five years old.

Salmon took part in a sortie over enemy territory every night for six weeks before D-Day. In a letter to his father, he wrote:

"And then we went ever again on D-Day. It made me happy to think that perhaps I was making it a bit easier for the American troops below me. The boys in the squadron were unstinting iti their praise of the 'guts' of the troops forcing the Normandy beachhead."

His father explained why his son did not leave the RCAF when America entered the war. A fellow American in Salmon's squadron decided to join the American Air Force. When he wrote and told Salmon that he was in school learning to fly "American style" Salmon decided to remain where he was.

"It was bad enough to think of having to go to flying school again, but I hated to think of losing that time against the Jerries."

The following day, (R/65514) George Eardley Macdonald, Toronto; George Angus Little, Winnipeg and Robert Hudson of Shawinigan Falls, Que. were proceeding to Trenton by automobile when Macdonald was killed near Oshawa. Little lost an ear and two teeth, while Hudson suffered a fractured skull and lacerations.

Jennings, Alexander and Gellner returned from overseas to train as pilots at No. 5 SFTS Brantford, receiving their wings July 8, 1943.

"Remember to hold high the traditions of the Royal Canadian Air Force. Remember Bishop, Collishaw, Barker and MacLeod. Remember these men and the other men who made those traditions. Remember, too, that you will find and must know that your work is work that takes the best kind of team work between gunner, observer and pilot.

"To you I say do your job well. Be careful where you drop your bombs, that you may drop them nobly. Good luck.

Course 15 Air Observers: March 31 - May 10, 1941

Three classes of observers and air gunners from all over the Empire graduated Saturday afternoon. Group Captain G.E. Wait, officer commanding, presented wings to a large class of observers.

Group Captain G.E. Waite, officer commanding the school, told graduates the most important part of their job, next to accurate bombing and part of it, was their ability at teamwork in the air.

"Teamwork of the highest type is absolutely necessary among you. It is of first importance in the fine association of observer with pilot, gunner with observer and pilot, pilot with observer and gunner. You will do well to strive for this teamwork first. Best of luck."

Wings were presented at No. 1 Manning Depot, Toronto by Air Marshal W.A. 'Billy' Bishop, V.C.. He addressed the graduates from both Jarvis and Fingal.

"If I were a young man today and not in uniform, I would be ashamed of myself.

"I am very proud to be here today and to have the honour of pinning your observer's wing on your chest. For the first time since November 1916, I am wearing my own observer's wing, and I am proud to wear it."

Course 20 Air Observers and Course 10 Air Gunners: June 9 - July 21, 1941

"I don't need to stress the importance of the work you fellows are going to do. You observers have a vital job to do. You gunners have the safety of the aircraft in the air as your responsibility. You've got to get the enemy before he gets you. We are fighting to exterminate a horde of rats.

"The value of teamwork on a bombing plane cannot be stressed too much. Each man has a vital job to do. No one is more important than the other. You've got to work together to pull your weight evenly. Yours is a high and gallant purpose.

"You have come to the end of your training. It is a pride and a pleasure to present these wings. A large number of you are from Australia. It has been a pleasure knowing you. All of us hope that in more peaceful time you will visit us again.

"I know you will always more than honor the trust that is being placed in you and uphold the finest traditions of the Air Force. Good luck to every one of you."

Their identity remained secret to prevent any reprisals in their homeland against their families there. The Norwegians did not get wings, but a handshake from their officer.

"You are through with your training in Canada now, with the exception of a short navigation course. Remember this one thing.

"You are being given the best training and when you get overseas you will get the best equipment the world can provide. Navigate your plane to the objective. Drop your bombs on the target and then get back home.

An inspiring message from Group Captain L.M. Isitt, of the New Zealand air mission in Canada was read by Group Captain G.E. Wait, officer commanding No. 1 Bombing and Gunnery School.

"Although this day means the completion fo your training period in Canada, qualifying you as wireless operators and air gunners, you will learn your training has only just commenced. From now on, each day's work, both at operational training units and on operational service, will broaden your knowledge and better fit you for the noble job of work to which you have given yourselves. You have been taught in your courses of instruction of the value of team work and I cannot impress upon each of you too much the necessity of your working as a team mate with other members of the crew when you join your operational unit.

"Be loyal to the captain of your aircraft and the other members. Work as a team, for the lives of each of you and the success of your work will depend upon the other. I join with the other people who, at this time, will be wishing you all the best for your future overseas. I wish you well and in joining the many hundreds of your New Zealand comrades overseas, remember the name of your homeland, the service to which you belong and do nothing which will bring discredit on them. Although you chaps will be leaving Canada, our thoughts will be still with you as you each do your bit in defence of our Empire and all it stands for in these critical days. The best of luck. Kia Ora!"

Addressing the RAAF graduates, Wing Commander Hanna noted the ceremony was being held the day following Anzac day.... "dedicated to your fathers who won undying glory in the last war.

"I know you will do the same as your brothers already have done in Crete and other places in this war."

Distinguished Flying Medal Citation Flight Sergeant WHITE and Sergeant WARD were pilot and bomb aimer respectively of an aircraft detailed to attack St. Nazaire one night in March 1943. Shortly after crossing the French coast on the outward flight, a Junkers 88 was encountered. In the ensuing combat the bomber was damaged and temporarily went out of control diving steeply. By strenuous effort Flight Sergeant WHITE pulled out of the dive at 4000 feet and although the aircraft was difficult to control continued to the target and bombed it. On completion of the bombing run, whilst taking photographs, Sergeant WARD discovered one bomb had failed to release and could not be jettisoned. He endeavoured to dislodge the bomb and after half an hour of unrelaxed effort succeeded. Afterwards, he went to the assistance of the pilot who was having great difficulty in controlling the damaged bomber. Displaying fine airmanship, Flight Sergeant WHITE succeeded in flying the aircraft back to base where a safe landing in difficult circumstances was effected. Douglas Storey had logged 772 air hours at Jarvis as a drogue operator prior to remustering to aircrew. He was called out of the ranks on parade and brought before Group Captain Bell-Irving to receive his commanding officer's personal congratulations.

Mickey Dillon was goaltender with the 1942 RCAF Allan Cup champions. Corporal Milt Schmidt also played with that team and was serving at Jarvis as a physical instructor. Mickey Dillon would perish in the Feb, 2, 1945 Paymaster Mining Disaster.

October 24, 1942

“There is no answer to it, no explanation of it; but the thrill of mortal combat is something that you are going to enjoy. I feel quite satisfied that you are going to enjoy serving your King and your country.

“Be justly proud of that badge you are wearing. I know you will, because I used to wear one myself. It is a high honor, and today you are joining that group of young men who are the finest in the world, the men of the air force."

Air Commodore Frank McGill, officer commanding No. 1 Training Command,R.C .A .F., pinned his first wings on wireless airgunners at No. 1 Bombing and Gunnery School, Jarvis, and, paid tribute to the school and the graduates in coming through successfully after battling some of the worst flying weather since the war was declared."

"While expressing my congratulations to you," the air commodore said, "I want to give credit to the crews of the maintenance staff and the ground crew. They did a fine job under trying conditions."

R. J. Keleher of St. John, N.B., and T. B. Atkinson,Clarks Harbor, N.S., were honor students in the two courses.

One of the graduates was 47 year old (1378626) Kadir Kamn Nagalingam of Manipay, Ceylon. He died in 1944 while serving with 166 Squadron.

Sgt. Dynes was married in the morning and arrived back on the station too late for the wings presentation. However, the Commanding Officer delegated the bride to pin on the wing at the reception and tea held in the W.D. Canteen.

Citation: This officer, while flying at night, noticed a train on fire. He immediately returned to his unit, landed his aircraft, organized and guided a party of airmen to the spot, where a train of tank cars was on fire. Several of the tank cars, filled with gasoline, had already exploded, adding to the conflagration. Pilot Officer Williams, with complete disregard of the extreme danger, personally directed and assisted the airmen in extinguishing the flames on five tank cars. A caboose, two box cars and eleven tanks cars were uncoupled and removed to safety. The resourcefulness, leadership and inspiring work of this officer resulted in the saving of a valuable part of a highly explosive and combustible trainload of war material.

Harry (James) Forster Kerr DFM - Co. 1 WAGs

A veteran of more than 30 flights over Europe as an air gunner. Awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal in April, 1942, for shooting down enemy aircraft. As an air gunner in a bomber crew, he has taken part in many raids on the Ruhr valley, Brest, Kiel, Cologne, Mannheim; Berlin, Essen, Hamburg and Paris. One raid in which he participated was on Genoa, in Italy. He was also on several mine-laying trips . Some of the raids on the targets mentioned were of the 1,000-bomber type. It was on April 26, 1942, while holding the rank of flight-sergeant, that he won the D.F.M. "We were returning from a raid on Rostock at night, when a Messerschmidt 110 attacked our Sterling bomber. He put 200 holes in our aircraft before we knew he was there. In a running fight I managed to get my four guns on him and put between 600 and 800 rounds in him at a distance of about 70 yards. He exploded and blew to bits." P.O . Kerr was awarded his W.A.G.'s' wing at Jarvis in November, 1940. He arrived overseas on Christmas day, with the rank of sergeant. Besides his operational duties as a gunner, he served for nine months instructing. He was commissioned in October, 1942. Three were spent months in hospital as the result of a crash landing . He remustered overseas and did his I.T.S . there, returning to Canada for elementary and service flying.
